Lisetta Carmi: non solo fotografa

Se ne è andata, dopo Letizia, in questo anno se ne va anche Lisetta. (Genova 1924 - Cisternino 2022)

Giovanna Calvenzi ha cercato di immortalarne la vita nel libro “Le cinque vite di Lisetta Carmi” pianista, fotografa, esule adepta di Babji, libera ed empatica. Lisetta si è mossa sempre con grazia, spesso in silenzio in completa libertà artefice delle sue scelte non facili e non tutte capite. Il reportage sull’Italsider, i travestiti di Genova i ritratti di Ezra Pound, l’ashram a Cisternino, le mostre e la riscoperta cui è andata incontro negli ultimi 10 anni. Lisetta ha saputo gestire con ironia e grazie questa inaspettata popolarità. Tutto nella vita di Lisetta ci ricorda quanto siamo impermanenti, come siamo destinati a consumarci e come questa energia che ci permette di vivere possa essere trasformata in qualcosa che sia utile anche agli altri.

Ascolto, aiuto, empatia, trasformazione parole che ripensando alla vita di Lisetta Carmi prendono un significato reale ci lascia un esempio e non solo le fotografie, una testimone del suo tempo a cavallo di due secoli turbolenti ma interessantissimi. Mancherà, speriamo che il suo archivio trovi presto una collocazione degna e possa essere reso accessibile a tutti.
“Ho fotografato per capire” amava dire, però prima ancora di capire ha saputo accettare aggiungo io, accettare questa vita con le sue storture e crudeltà, non rassegnandosi ma trovando una via, una strada per poter continuare ad essere Lisetta Carmi.

Cosa ci insegnano le molte vite di Lisetta Carmi? Che abbiamo delle possibilità, che forse non dobbiamo troppo tormentarci con la domanda di Bruce Chatwin:“Che cosa ci faccio qui?” e dobbiamo cercare di essere di più. In un mondo che è tutto apparire fare con costanza e continuità godendosi il viaggio senza per forza avere una meta troppo specifica o legata al successo esteriore può essere una opzione.
Lisetta è stata perseguitata, ha abbracciato ed abbandonato la religione con cui è nata, la fotografia, il pianoforte ed infine pronta ha lasciato anche questa vita.
Solo in Italiano qui c’è un bellissimo audio documentario di Daniele Segre: “Lisetta Carmi, un'anima in cammino” e come dice Lisetta: “La mia vita è stata tutta una meraviglia, ricca di gioia e dolore, di grandi dolori che hanno arricchito la mia anima. Io sono convinta che le difficoltà che incontriamo sul nostro cammino sono le più alte benedizioni, perché ci aiutano a crescere e a trovare il nostro se più profondo.”

He will be missing, we hope that his archive will soon find a worthy location and can be made accessible to all.

"I photographed to understand" he loved to say, but even before understanding he was able to accept, I add, accept this life with its distortions and cruelties, not resigning himself but finding a way, a way to continue being Lisetta Carmi.

What do the many lives of Lisetta Carmi teach us? That we have possibilities, that perhaps we shouldn't pester ourselves too much with Bruce Chatwin's question. "What am I doing here?" and we must try to be more. In a world that is all about doing things with constancy and continuity, enjoying the journey without necessarily having a destination that is too specific or linked to external success, it can be an option.

Lisetta was persecuted, she changed her religion, she embraced and abandoned the religion she was born with, photography, the piano and finally she left this life too.
